Character design and concept for a printed ‘fact fact’ style quarterly newsletter for RYA Junior members.

The Brief

The Royal Yachting Association is the national body for dinghy, yacht and motor cruising, all forms of sail racing, RIBs and sports boats, windsurfing and personal watercraft and a leading representative for inland waterways cruising. 

OnBoard (OB) is all about introducing young people, aged 8 to 18, to sailing and windsurfing.The RYA contacted us to produce a design concept for their junior members aged 8-12 years. They wanted to engage them in education and sailing as a sport and introduce their families to the many courses and services the RYA offer.  They wanted us to produce a ‘fact sheet’ style quarterly newsletter with puzzles and quizzes, fact, stories, the gallery and an opportunity to share their experiences with other readers. 

 
 

The Solution

Using the RYA branding we designed a character called ‘Bob the Buoy’ who formed the basis for the design. We created the identity for the `junior members’ and using the main brand guidelines developed the quarterly newsletter. 

We also developed the character to a life size ‘Bob’ who appears at the Boat Show and various events for the juniors!
